4) As coach of the Tokyo Apaches, do you face challenges with cultural or language barriers?

I think what we have tried to do is to incorporate language which we could react to quickly in the heat of the moment. Sometimes its hard but most of the time, it’s pretty easy.
The biggest challenge for Japanese players is getting over the age difference.
They respect their elders, but in a game of basketball, once you are in a court, you’ve got to play hard no matter the age. After the game, you can show all the respect that you want.

5) I read somewhere that you prefer the term 'teacher' instead of 'coach'.

I think if you look at the term coach, it’s more like a dictator.
But as a teacher, you are giving lessons.

6) Most of our readers are foreign students living in Japan, would you have any advice for them on how to tackle the 'game' of life?
I think you have to have patience in life.
Mostly, you need a sense of humor because most things are not going to go your way.
If you study all the time, you are going to be stressed. You’ve got to find a way to deal with that stress. Keep smiling, because life goes on.
